Manchester & District Society of Past Lady Golf Captains
Founded on October 11th, 1959 at Houldsworth Hall Golf Club, our Society has been proudly bringing together past Lady Captains from golf clubs within a 25-mile radius of Manchester Town Hall for nearly 66 years.
Today, we are a thriving community of over 500 members. Membership is open to any past Lady Captain from an eligible club, with an annual fee of just £3.
Each year, we host two 18-hole competitions, culminating in a final round between the winners. The champion pair is awarded the Society Trophy, which is proudly displayed at their home club for the year. In addition to these events, we also hold a 9-hole competition. The winner is presented with the prestigious Brenda Flett Rose Bowl, named in honour of a former Society Captain.
Our calendar concludes with a much-loved Annual Luncheon each October, a wonderful opportunity to catch up, celebrate, and reflect on another fantastic year of golf and friendship.

The Society of Past Manchester Lady Captains has over 600 members from clubs within a 25-mile radius of Manchester Town Hall, including many from Cheshire, and holds competitions each year for their members and an annual lunch with a guest speaker at the end of the season at Lancashire Cricket Club.
WE choose a new Captain each year and taking over from Anne Moizer (Chorlton Golf Club) the proud Captain for 2026 is Barbara Schofield who has served with great distinction in top roles in a variety of golfing organisations in the area over the years.
Barbara said: “I am so looking forward to my year in office and thank everyone who was involved in my election and hopefully, I can help to make this year an enjoyable year for everyone.
Golf has given me so much enjoyment particularly in my Lady Captain’s year in 2012 at Blackley Golf Club, although it was the wettest Summer on record.
In the Lady Captain’s Society we have 2x 18 hole and 1x 9 hole competitions at different clubs with the finals at my club, Blackley Golf Club on Friday August 7th, everyone welcome, players and spectators!
Barbara joined Blackley Golf Club in 1989 playing in team matches, Bell Cup matches and Opens in nearby clubs. In 2011 she joined the Ladies Handicap Committee and still gives her time as Ladies Handicap Secretary. In 2018 she joined the Pro, coaching juniors – her former teaching prowess proving very useful.
Despite 6 hip replacements she still plays 18-hole golf and represents Blackley in team matches including the Bell Cup.
